PARADOXIC REALISM
Societies and cultures are rapidly changing as we embrace our new modern technologies. Human health and well-being is also on the same roller coaster as we evolve and adapt to those changes. Life as we know it now is very different to how we conducted life 50 years ago and will be hugely different 50 years from now. Despite modern technology helping us live longer and wealthier; achieving more material possessions, a large proportion of our communities are less content than they have ever been before. Information overload from today’s media along with the fears and insecurities created by the same media process is exacerbating problems for society and its future. A significant problem is global warming which has been fueled by society’s massive and ever growing consumption.
The cause and effect of many of the problems we face are commented on in this photo essay. The latest photo technologies have been utilised to create realistic images which reflect the paradox that photography has always been considered as factual or a true representation of a moment in time, yet has been used constantly to misrepresent manipulate public opinion.
Paradoxic Realism highlights some of the ambiguities of modern society, as it ‘progresses’ into the future. Within this progress there are undoubtedly negative and positive social and environmental impacts. It is debatable as to whether or not this progress is causing our very destruction. Our very future could be in doubt due to overpopulation and extreme consumption. How man evolves and adapts to these changes is a dilemma that needs to be addressed and understood by everyone, to ensure future generations continue to exist…………
